synopsis book 1

Book One: Hourglass of Destruction

The unexpected death of their parents sends three grieving orphans, Bellae, Jumeaux and Gimelli, into the world of the Independent Knights. Once the unquestioned lords of law and order, the Knights were battered and laid-low by the Dark Wars sixty years ago. They are now locked in a power struggle with their one time allies, the faith-filled Proliate and timeworn Magicians.

Nestled within the sheltering confines of castle life the three sibling’s first seven years are filled with routine and hard work. They are unaware that all of Verngaurd is galloping toward chaos, and that they will play a crucial role in its outcome.

Bellae, is precocious and spirited, but isolated by her unique gift. She is the last descendent of an archaic race of animal talkers. Bellae’s innocence starts to whither as the world unravels and a strange winged creature begins to follow her.

The leader of the Knights, Friar Pallium, is plagued by powerful visions of the Proliate destroying the Knight’s few remaining castles. To make matters worse, rumors of large numbers of Dark Warriors returning from across the sea start to whistle in the breeze. Envoys of dragons, Dwarves and Elves start to visit the castle as reports of war and an ancient prophecy coming of age start to swirl. Some believe the Chosen One in the prophecy is Bellae, others her brother Jumeaux.

The squires, a group of Knights, and Friar Pallium head out to the historical Tournament of Flags. Many believe the competition is the last chance for Verngaurd to put aside their differences and unite against the looming Dark Warrior threat.

The journey to the martial olympics opens the squire’s eyes to the horrors happening in the countryside and the tragic truth that the Knights are losing both power and respect. At the Tournament of Flags they are introduced to some of the nations of Verngaurd: Elves, Dwarves, humans, Magicians, and dragons.

The inconceivably old Master Magician, Veneficus, conspires with Friar Pallium to help bring the countries of Verngaurd together to face the emerging threat of the Dark Warriors and their vile leader, the White Wizard. They theorize that their old enemy has a new strategy, trying to splinter age-old alliances and create infighting amongst those who should stand against them.

The ancient Magician is also eager to solve the prophecy which promises to renew his waning magic crystals and bring peace to the world. The all powerful crystals were supposedly stolen to keep them from a mysterious evil, but all of Verngaurd may now be left defenseless against the invading hordes of Dark Warriors.

Instead of cohesion the Tournament sees tempers and egos blazing as a hidden evil seems to be playing the countries of Verngaurd against each other. Tragedy strikes the tournament during the dragon battle and someone is killed under suspicious circumstances. Can the death bring them together? The temporary good will among the nations implodes as another catastrophe strikes.

book 2 synopsis

Book Two: Battle of Trepas

The horrific details of the disaster ending Book One are revealed. A ruthless massacre of innocent civilians has come to pass, and someone has framed the Elves of Creber and Northern Dwarves. The Tournament ends prematurely with Verngaurd splintered and surging towards a civil war despite the looming threat of the Dark Warriors, and the waning supply of magic crystals to fight the White Wizard.

As the Knights and squires go to bury their fallen comrade the Dark Warriors attack. Their behavior is bizarre to the point of insanity. They seem to hunger for death in service of their tyrannical master, the White Wizard. A battle with them sends the squires scattered across Verngaurd. The race to determine who is the Chosen One heats up and we are immersed into the world of the Elves, dragons, Magicians, and the Proliate. Reality, distorted and hard to read, is being masterfully manipulated and forcing the nations of Verngaurd towards brutal infighting.

Bellae and her sister Gimelli are scooped up by the League of Truth, the archaic company that stole the source of magic eons ago and developed the prophesy. The winged creature stalking Bellae is revealed to be a noble Eaglian (half man-half eagle). The Magicians grab Jumeaux, both sides betting they have the Chosen One who can solve the prophecy and find the original magic crystals.

The squires hardships are dwarfed by the massive, vulgar battles taking place across the land pitting the Knights against the Proliate. Hopelessly outnumbered, Friar turns to questionable techniques with blood splattering, bone crunching, entrail exposing success that leave character and reader alike questioning if the end justifies the means. These titanic battles draw on almost every corner of Verngaurd and its mythical creatures.

Despite learning he is not the Chosen One, Jumeaux is finally feeling at home with the Magicians and is anxious to prove his worth. He does so by helping track his sisters on their quest to solve the prophecy. Veneficus sees this as an opportunity to let Bellae do the work before swooping down once she obtains the magic crystals. He can then use them to fight the evil percolating into Verngaurd.

Bellae ends up meeting the wizened blue dragons, Sprites, and Fairies who hold the first clues to the ancient prophecy. The squires are not pleased to learn the prophecy involves solving a series of riddles, each with serious risk of death. However, the quest is now clearly defined, as are the core band of allies who will seek the truth: Bellae, her sister Gimelli, squires Scelto and Lontas, the young Elf Kainen, Sankari (a Fairy), Arend (an Eaglian), and a few animal friends.

As they head into the desert to solve the first mystery, Verngaurd lies in a mangled mess. With the Dark Warriors arriving in greater numbers and magic nearly spent, the critical nature of their odyssey is fully realized.
